Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Turkey Day! To kick off the day, I played a game of flag football in Hyde Park. It was really fun and we all got pretty into it (I have the mud stains to prove it). Dr. Soper was quite surprised when I shoved him back in order to block. My team couldn’t quite pull off a win, but we had fun trying. After football I went with a bunch of the girls to a service at St. Paul’s honoring America. The choir sang “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” and everyone sang “America the Beautiful.” A sermon was given on gratitude and the American Ambassador also said a few words. It was the perfect way to pay tribute to the red, white, and blue. I loved seeing the American flag being carried in my US Marines.

After the service we headed back right in time to have our Thanksgiving meal at 1PM. Jaelyn cooked so naturally the food was good. My favorites were the stuffing and pumpkin pie. However, I must admit that I would have preferred to have my mom’s food because it’s better. After eating and feeling very full, Abby, Kacey, Annie, Lauren, and I watch Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving and took a long nap. We then went to a movie theater at Shepherd’s Bush and saw New Moon. The theater was really nice and had seats the size of a lay-z-boy. The movie was good, but a little cheese. And I must say that I am still “Team Edward.” After the movie we came home, had way too many rounds of pie, had some DC, danced in the kitchen, talked, did some Pilates, and I skyped everyone at Nana’s. It was so fun to see everyone and it made me want to be in two places at once. Although today hasn’t been my usual Thanksgiving, it was so fun to celebrate it here and I’m so thankful for the opportunity I have to be in London.

Today was a really fun day, but freezing cold. We loaded the coach at 8:30AM and headed to Blenheim Palace. I had never even heard of it before, thus had no expectations. It turned out to be so beautiful and interesting. Blenheim Palace was the birthplace of Churchill and is the residence for the Duke of Blenheim. The architectural style is Baroque and it was fun because all of the Christmas decorations were up. We went on an hour-long tour with a very good tour guide and then explored the gardens.

After the Palace we headed to Oxford. We had a darling old man as a tour guide that was very interesting. The only problem was that the tour was outside, 90 minutes long, and FREEZING cold. Yes William…I did see “the great dining hall” from that one movie you like. All of the buildings were beautiful and I loved learning about the system of colleges within the university. After our tour Abby, Annie, Kacey, Lauren and I grabbed a steamer at Starbucks and the walked around the town. We all were happy to find some cute Oxford apparel and do a little Christmas shopping. We loaded the coach at 5PM and headed back to the centre. It was a 5 pound dinner night so Abby and I went and had chicken avocado salads at Zizzi. After dinner we helped Jaelyn in the kitchen, had some DC, put a DC on Soper’s doorstep, and did some homework.

A Morning of Museums

This morning I had Biology for about an hour and a half and then we headed to the Natural History Museum. When we were there we went to the a Human Biology exhibit that explored cells and DNA. It turned out to be really interesting and was a lot of fun. Once we were finished Annie, Lauren, Abby, Kacey, and I headed next store to the V&A. This was my second visit and so I went back to see the things I had missed which was a photography exhibit and a fashion exhibit. The photography exhibit wasn’t anything special, but the fashion exhibit was really cool. Shoes and dresses/outfits from throughout the years were displayed. After the V&A we headed back to the Centre for a snack and then made our last trip to Primark. Before I knew it, it was time for dinner. We had delicious chicken tacos that I made into a salad. After dinner a bunch of us had a sketching party and watched Friends/The Proposal. Once again…another fun day.

Today was a busy school day considering that I after today I only have each class two more times. I had humanities and religion, then went running in the rain with Abby, Kacey, and Annie, and then had my other humanities class. After class I took a shower, did some homework, and then went to the Post Office and Tesco with Annie and Kacey. For dinner we had some delicious white chicken chili and then it was off to the Opera. This was an organized group event, so we all went to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to see “Tsarina’s Slippers.” The Opera was in Russian and it all honesty; I found most of it quite boring. However, I did enjoy the instrumentals and the ballet dancers. After it ended, I headed back to the centre and did homework. I can’t believe how fast time is flying and how much I still have to do including homework and playing in London.

Goodbye Paris

Today was my 9^th and final day in Paris. It started with sleeping in until about 8:45AM and checking out of our hotel by about 9:30AM. Kacey, Annie, Abby, Laura, and I then headed to the train station to store our bags. Considering I was hauling over a week’s worth of clothes, Paris purchases, and my computer, my bag was quite heavy. I thought I might snap my back in half and I was so happy when we finally got to the lockers. However, the train station did randomly have one thing to offer and that was a store with the kind of ear warmers I have been searching for. Everyone else was happy about the find too and we all purchased one. After the station we headed to the Moulin Rouge. We went out of curiosity and high hope, but it turned out to be nothing special. After snapping a picture, we made a run out of the sketchy area.

Our next stop was lunch crepes at our favorite crepe stand near the Saint Michelle Fountain. Kacey and I made the wise decision to go halfsies on a cheese and chicken crepe. It was delicious and hit the spot. Our next stop was the Eiffel Tower for one last look and picture stop. Naturally, we also had out last taste of a Nutella, banana, and coconut crepe. While taking pictures, we met a group of teenage boys that were dressed up for some sort of initiation and wanted to be in pictures with us.

After the tower we headed to the Opera House and Galleries Lafayette. Galleries Lafayette was super crowded with it being a Saturday and the holidays, so we just looked at the main floor/dome and then went to the Longchamp department. It was so crowded that we had to wait in a line and wait our turn before being let into the department. However, it was worth the wait because Kacey and I both found cute purses. Thanks to Nana for letting me pick something out in Paris for my birthday. After shopping we jumped on the Metro and headed to the Champs Ellysees. Our first stop was the giant Haagen’daz. Kacey and I shared a 3-scoop cup with Dolce De Leche, Chocolate Midnight Cookie, and Vanilla Carmel Brownie. Yes! It was as good as it sounds. We then worked our way through the busy crowds up to McDonalds so we could sit and rest for a minute.

After resting, we made one last stop at our favorite candy store to get some Bonbons (Abby’s total was only 2.05 this time), and then wandered/played with make-up in Sephora. At about 7:00PM we were exhausted so we said goodbye to Paris and headed to the train station. Once to the station we picked up our luggage, waited until we could go through security, and the boarded the Chunnel to London. Paris was amazing, but I’m very tired and excited to be back home in London. I love that London feels like home to me, but hate that the next time I leave London, it will be for good. I can’t believe how fast my time here has gone and it makes me so sad when I think about leaving. I guess I just better live up the next 3 weeks.

Disneyland Paris: "The Happiest Place on Earth"

Today was a very fun and much needed day. Kacey, Laura, Annie, Abby, and I decided it was time to give the museums a rest and checkout Euro Disney. After all, when again would we be back and have the chance to go as a group? Our day started at about 8AM by grabbing some breakfast at a bakery and then taking the train to Disneyland Paris. I couldn’t help but smile the second we walked out of the station and saw the park. We were all so excited to be there. The last time I went to Disneyland was when I was 3 and Disneyworld when I was 9, so it was about time for another visit. We purchased our park hopper tickets and then entered right into the Disneyland Park. Our first ride was Indiana Jones. It was really fun, but rattled us a lot. Next up was Pirates of the Caribbean, followed by Peter Pan. This was my favorite because we got to fly over London and I felt right at home. Although it was only about 11:15 AM, we decided we could use a little snack and so we all shared some yummy kettle corn and Cola Light (not to be confused about Diet Coke). We then went on Space Mountain, which was another favorite of mine. It lasted a long time and was so fun.

After Space Mountain we decided to have some lunch at Pizza Planet (the Pizza place in Toy Story). It was yummy and I was stoked about the Mickey shaped pizza. When we left lunch, we ran into a bunch of the characters. Pictures with them seemed to be in high demand, so we had to fight our way next to them. We then headed over to the other park, Disney Studios. The first ride we went on was Rockin’ Rollercoaster. It was pretty fun, but the best part was the take off. Next up, and my favorite was the Tower of Terror. I went on it in Florida, but forgot how fun it was. The only problem was that I somehow swallowed air when we dropped, resulting in hiccups for about 2 hours. When we got off of the ride, we were just in time for a performance/parade with all of the characters. It was fun to watch/hear because a lot of the songs were in French.

By mid-afternoon we were all a little chilly and hoping to find sweatshirts. We probably looked in every store in both parks, but were unsuccessful. After our attempt to find sweatshirts, we went on the Haunted Manor. This one turned out to be pretty lame, but it was ok because the Teacups that we went on after made up for it. Next ride was Thunder Mountain. This one is a classic, thus also a fun ride. It was also the only ride we decided to use Fast Passes for, considering the wait was 25 minutes. After Thunder Mountain it was the main parade with all of the characters and floats throughout the park. I loved seeing the many costumes and creative ideas (the army men and lion king animals were my favorites). We then rushed to Space Mountain for a second ride and NO line considering most were still at the parade. For some reason it made me a little sick/gave me a headache the second time, but that didn’t stop me from going on Star Tours. Star Tours was cool, but didn’t help me feel any better. I guess I am aging and am not what I used to be when it comes to rides. We then stopped at one last shop on the way out to get some gifts and for me to get a tall glass for Château Bass (my future apartment) and my Diet Coke.

After shopping we were all hungry and so we decided to get food in Disney Village. It was nothing special, but at least it was something. We then used up some of our coins in the vending machine to buy some Bonbons and a Beuno Bar before getting on the train back to Paris. All in all, I couldn’t have asked for a better day. However, I’m pretty convinced that there are no rules or regulations in Europe considering that many of the rides seemed a little dangerous and I was allowed to take pictures while on the rides. But hey… Disneyland + Paris + Christmas + No lines + Friends, really does equal the “Happiest Place on Earth.”

This morning started with saying bye to my parents at about 8AM. It was sad to say bye, but at least I will see them three weeks from now. I had so much fun with my parents and am so glad they came. After all, they visited Abigail and Andrew on their missions and Study Abroad is my mission, so it’s fitting they came. Once I said bye to them, I climbed back into bed and slept/watched some Gossip Girl until Kacey, Laura, Abby, and Annie came and met me at the hotel. Once they arrived we stored all of our luggage and then headed to the D’Orsay.

The D’Orsay is hands down one of my favorite museums. I love the size of it and love the art inside. A few of my favorites include pieces by, Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas. We spent a few hours there seeing everything and completing our Humanities assignments and then went and got lunch crepes. My crepe consisted of cheese, feta, and chicken. It was SO good, but then I felt SO full once I was done. After eating we headed to Notre Dame to climb the tower and see the church. While we were outside Notre Dame and about to take a picture, we suddenly heard a man come up right behind us and say “You’re going to think I’m so weird.” It turned out to be Soper sneaking into our picture, but he totally scared Kace and I. We all got a good laugh, and picture out of it and then we headed over to Saint Chapelle. Although I already did both of these with my parents, it was fun to go back.

After the windows it was time to say bye to Lauren who was leaving with BYU and time for us to go to the Rodin. Although I had already been here as well, it was so fun to go back. We started in the gardens and had so much fun mimicking the sculptures, making videos, and laughing. After the Rodin, we tried to go to Napoleon’s Tomb, but were three minutes too late. However, it wasn’t a problem because we just jumped on the Metro and headed to the L’Orangerie. We got there 25 minutes before it closed, so our visit was short, but we managed to see everything.

From the L’Orangerie we walked all of the way up the Champs Ellysees. We made a stop at the Disney store to find out about Paris Disneyland, picked up some Bonbons, and then picked up our bags before taking them to out new hotel. The Hotel Mac Mohen turned out to be a little sketchy, but the location was great and there happened to be an extra twin bed. After checking in, we headed over to McDonalds to use the Internet. We then went and climbed the arc. It turned out to be rather tiring considering I was hauling my computer in my purse, but well worth it. The view was great and it was fun to hang out on top. After the Arc, we went back to the hotel where we watched some Gossip Girl and fell fast asleep.

My 20th Birthday in Paris

Well, well, well, what can I say? It isn’t everyday that one gets to spend their birthday in Paris, with their friends, AND with their parents. Not to mention, visit Versailles, the Louvre, and go to the tope of the Eiffel Tower. However, I was lucky enough to do all of the above and more.

My day actually started quite interestingly. Gladdus knocked on my door before breakfast and gave me a darling card and necklace. I then had a continental breakfast at the hotel and then headed with the entire group to Versailles. The plan was to walk to the train station and then get on a train to Versailles. However, it turned out that Soper accidently took us on a 45-minute walk of industrial Paris before finding the station. I was amused when we passed the ghetto hotel we stayed in last year with Windy, but was even more amused when Lisa Harris (P.A.) tripped and “sprained” her ankle. It was quite dramatic and only became more amusing/dramatic. Once we finally got to the station, we boarded the train (yes, Brooke did get left again), and were at Versailles within 45-minutes. Versailles itself is very beautiful, yet it is quite sickening to think about the harsh living conditions of French at the time, while Louie was busy living in such an elaborate estate. The Hall of Mirrors was my favorite part of the estate and I also really liked the art and different wallpapers inside. While we were walking around, we discover that P.A. had conned a few of the girls into pushing her around in a wheelchair. I wish I could say I snapped the below picture of her, but the credit must be given to Annie. Even Soper found the whole wheelchair act quite funny. After touring the inside, we headed out to the gardens. The gardens were pretty, but not as pretty as they were when I saw them last summer. Kacey, Laura, Bev, Abby, Annie and I decided to walk down to Marie Antionette’s House. However once we walked all of the way ther, Kacey and I were really tired and decided to wait outside for them since we had already seen it last summer. We waited thinking they would only take about 20 minutes, but after 45 minutes of waiting, we decided to head back into the city. However, while we were sitting there we had a lot of fun reflecting on out lives and memories we have had together. Being at Versailles really made us miss Jeff and David, considering that the last time we were there it was with them.

Kace and I grabbed a DC and some potato wedges as a little snack (they are so good in Europe) and then jumped on the train. We got off near the Louvre and got a pizza/bread type of thing at a little bakery before heading over to meet the other girls at the Louvre. When we got to the Louvre, Abby informed us that she has been “coat-picked” by one of the keychain guys at Versailles. It was sad, but we couldn’t help but laugh. We then headed inside and attempted to find our way around. The Louvre is so big, but we managed to find our favorites as well as complete out Humanities assignments. My very favorite piece was “The Winged Victory of Samothrace.” I don’t know what it is about this piece, but it is breathtaking.

After touring the Louvre we were all exhausted, and some a little grumpy, but Kacey and I headed to my hotel to freshen up before dinner. It had only been about 24 hours since I had seen my parents, but it was so good to see them again. As I mentioned, I felt as though I was experiencing separation anxiety from both my parents and the girls.

For my birthday dinner, Kacey, my parents, and I went to a delicious French restaurant with a view overlooking the Eiffel Tower. I had some French Onion Soup and delicious salmon (2 of my favorites). It was so fun to be with three of my favorite people and have the chance to talk with my parents all about our experience on Study Abroad.

After dinner the four of us headed down to the Eiffel Tower to meet Abby, Annie, Bev, and Laura. We lucked out because there was no line and we headed right up to the tope. We first stopped on the first level and then worked our way up all the way to the 3^rd level. It was very windy on top, but the view was incredible. We had a fun time taking pictures, finding the flags of other countries, and looking at the entire city. This moment on top of the Eiffel Tower with my friends and parents was one I will never forget. As we were heading down, everyone decided to sing “Happy Birthday” to me. This was extremely embarrassing, as I hate attention being drawn to me in public. However, all of my friends did get a kick out of “Fried Ham, Fried Ham” when my parents sang it to me.

After the Eiffel Tower we stopped for delicious dessert crepes. I had a banana and Nutella crepe and boy was it good. Once we all had our crepes, we walked up to the viewing platform and towards the hotel. It was then time for the girls to get back to the BYU hotel, so we said bye and then headed back to our hotel. When we got back to the hotel my mom and I decided to watch You’ve Got Mail. My dad was sweet and swapped me beds, so my mom and I could have a sleepover/watch our movie. I may be getting old, but I will never be too old for a sleepover with my mom. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better day and am so thankful for such amazing friends and parents. Thanks to everyone who made it such a wonderful day.

A Tuesday in Paris

Today was a busy day and started with a slight drizzle. We have actually been really lucky with the weather considering the forecast was rain everyday and this was the first we needed our umbrellas. The first thing we did was walk to the Rodin Museum (I must say that the location of out hotel is perfect because it is within walking distance of so much, plus it is right by the Eiffel Tower…perfect for picture stops). Once to the Rodin, we toured the inside first and then the gardens. I couldn’t believe how large the collection was and how talented Rodin was. The museum, which was also his house, was so beautiful as were the gardens. We had a lot of fun reading about each of the pieces and reenacting some of them.

By about noon, it was time to leave the Rodin and go meet BYU. We had to get on the Metro and go to the slums of Paris, but it was so fun to see everyone. I ran straight to my friends and Kacey ran straight to my mom and dad. It’s weird because when you live with people 24/7, 4 days away from them feels like 4 weeks. I introduced my parents to everyone and then we grabbed some lunch before meeting everyone at the Sacrecouer. Once to the Sacrecouer, we ate our lunch and then went inside the church. I hesitantly (due to separation anxiety) said bye to the parentals for the day and headed off with the girls. It was fun to be with everyone again and in Paris.

We decided to head over to the Champs Ellysees to shop, see the Arc, and get some bonbons…naturally. After shopping, we decided to go on a dusk river cruise. It was really cold on the river, but the views of the city were beautiful. After the cruise, we went and got Happy Meals at McDonalds. Yes, we had American food for our first night in Paris (just one of the slight differences from traveling with students vs. parents). After dinner, Kacey and I walked back to my parents hotel to get my sleepover stuff. On the way we stopped at Hagen’ daz and shared some delicious ice cream. After grabbing my stuff, we jumped on the Metro and headed to our BYU hotel. Despite the remote location of the hotel, it was actually pretty nice. I was also happy because I got Abby as a roommate, which meant laughs, talking until 2AM, me falling off of the counter, and doorbell ditching. Once again…another wonderful day in magical Paris. Oh and I can’t forget…HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE! I think this is the first time we have spent our birthdays apart, but I hope she has/had a wonderful day!

Monday in Paris

Today was another wonderful day in Paris. We all slept in and then headed out to explore more of the city. Naturally, as soon as we came out of the Metro, my Dad was hungry. We just so happened to be right be Angelina’s on Rue Rivoli and so we decided to “feed the beast” and enjoy a lovely brunch. My mom and I both ordered the full breakfast that included freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, a plate of pastries with delicious butter and jam, and some divinely rich hot chocolate. My dad ordered a yummy omelet. I think it would be safe to say this was the best meal we have had, plus the restaurant itself was darling.

Following brunch we headed over to L’Orangerie. This museum features the 8 large water lily paintings by Monet in addition to other impressionism works such as Renoir. Our next stop was Notre Dame. Yes, this was our 3^rd time back, but this time we went so we could climb to the top. We were the long wasn’t too long and we headed up the 400 or so steps. The view was really beautiful and it was really cool to see one of the bells. After Notre Dame, we headed just down the river to the Deportation Memorial. This is a memorial honoring those who were killed in the holocaust. It was sad, but moving. We then headed over to Saint Chapelle, which is a church known for its stunning glass windows. The entire church was built in less than 11 years, and the glass is exquisite. It’s funny because the chapel is tucked away and one would never know it existed just by walking down the road.

After seeing the windows is was time for lunch. We decided to stop at a crepe stand where my mom and I got crepes and my dad got a sandwich with super spicy mustard. It was fun because the stand was right by the Saint Michelle Fountains, which were very pretty. After eating, it was time for my dad to go rest while my mom and I headed over to the Champs Ellysees for some shopping. We had so much fun wandering down the boulevard and I was happy because I found my favorite French face wash at Monoprix, bonbons at a candy shop, my mom found her favorite chocolates, and we found some darling baby clothes. Other highlight while shopping included a red carpet dog event that was going on and the Louis Vuitton Windows.

After shopping we headed back to the hotel to grab my Dad and then went to dinner. Believe it or not, we ended up going to an Italian place that was really yummy. After dinner we walked to the Arc de Triumph to climb to the top. It turned out we were 2 minutes too late and were denied access. However, we still walked around the base of it. After a long, but very fun day we headed back to the hotel. I still can’t believe I am lucky enough to be in Paris with my parents and have them all to myself. I have missed them so much and have loved having this time with them.

Today was another great day in Paris. I enjoyed sleeping in and then my Dad, Mom, and I went to church as the Paris ward. It was much larger than I expected and I could actually understand things because everything was translated. After church we headed to the Pompidou (modern art museum). The best way to explain everything about the Pompidou is that is all weird, but cool at the same time. The building itself is very modern and was controversial when constructed in the 1970’s due to the way it contrasted with its setting. My favorite pieces were works by Picasso, Pollock, Duchamp, Matisse, Delaunay, and Jorn.

After the Pompidou, we had lunch at a cute café near Les Halles. The only downside was the random birds that would fly in. Knowing how much I hate birds, my mom pretended as though one was on my leg. I shrieked and everyone around us was staring/laughing at me. So embarrassing and contrary to what Lis thought, not funny. After lunch we walked over to Notre Dame for an Organ Concert. It was so cool to hear the organ for an extended amount of time and in full use. After the concert we wandered around looking for the bus we needed, but were unsuccessful. We ended up taking the Metro and made it just in tome to visit the Marmotten Museum. This was a favorite of the day. The museum holds the private collection of Marmotten, which includes a large amount of impressionism, particularly Monet. We then enjoyed a pleasant walk back to the hotel and had a nice evening just talking, hanging out, and finishing The Italian Job.

Paris: Day 2

Today I had the luxury of sleeping in until 10 AM (yes I did sleep for 13 hours straight). My mom and I then decided to have some girl time and go shopping. Our first stop was Galleries Lafayette. Think of the largest department store you know and then double it and you will have an idea of the size of this. It is actually located in three different buildings, divided up between departments. We couldn’t have visited at a better time as all of the Christmas decorations are up and the Windows are decked out. We had so much fun wandering through the whole store. My favorite section was probably the wedding dresses, or shoe department (it is an entire floor). It was also fun because the very top level had an outside balcony with a view of the whole city. The building itself was gorgeous and is centered around a beautiful gold dome. Our next stop was Ah Printemps, another beautiful department store. Their Christmas decorations were centered on these huge Matruskahs (stacking dolls) made by Channel.

After shopping for a while, we decided to go pull my Dad away from his book. When we found him, he was just 10 pages away from finishing his 500-page book… that he started this trip. Now I know where I get my love and determination for reading. The three of us then headed to lunch at a restaurant called Café Le Bosquet. We each enjoyed a really yummy bowl of French Onion Soup (seemed fitting) and sandwiches. It rained while we were eating, but luckily it cleared up by the time we were finished. We then walked to Bon Marche. This was the very first department store in Paris and is similar to Harrods in that is has just about everything. My mom and I were both happy to find some beautiful stationary and my Dad was happy to find a chair. Our next stop within the store was the food hall. There were all sorts of samples from juice to chocolate and my mom made a few good purchases. We then jumped on the Metro to head back to the hotel. We did make one last stop at a little grocery store to buy some fruit and our favorite peach juice. Once back to the hotel, my Dad and I went and worked out in the Fitness center. I must say that he may be getting old, but is in great shape. He did agree with M.C. about me learning how to do push-ups. I ended the night snuggling with my parents (like the good old days) and watching The Italian Job.

Today started early, well actually is was a continuation of Thursday considering I never went to bed. I had to wake up at 3:30 AM to catch a bus so I figured I was best off to just stay up rather than sleep through my alarm. I caught a bus at 4:00 AM and arrived at St. Pancres Station at about 4:45 AM. I then enjoyed the free Wifi before loading the Chunnel to Paris at 5:30 AM. I slept the entire way, making the 2.5-hour ride fly by. I was so excited to see my Mom and Dad, but first had to get unload my huge suitcase and duffle off of the train. Once settled, I couldn’t move fast enough to get to my patents. They were waiting for me right at the end of the train and I almost wanted to cry when I saw them because I was so happy. One of the biggest surprises to me about being away is how much I have missed my family. I knew I would miss them, but I have missed them even more and it was so good to see them. They both looked so good and it was so good to hug them slash had my heavy bag over to my dad. From the train station we loaded the Metro and headed to the hotel. On the way to the hotel we picked up some yummy pastries for breakfast.

Once to the hotel we relaxed/caught up and then headed out to explore Paris. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather; blue skies and about 60 degrees. Our hotel is right by the Eiffel Tower and so we walked to the tower and then got on a bus to tour the city. We got off in Marais, picked up some sandwiches and Diet Coke (actually Cola Light, which isn’t as good), and then ate it in a darling little park called Place De Vosges.

After lunch we went to the home of Victor Hugo (author of Les Miserables and Notre Dame). We then did a walking tour of the area and stopped at the Carnavalet, which is a museum about the Revolution. Next stop was the wall honoring people who saved Jews during World War 1. We then headed over to Notre Dame just in time to see the stain glass windows right as the sun was behind them.

By this point my dad was quite hungry to we walked along Seine to Rue Cler where we ate dinner at Cafe Du Marche. After dinner we walked home, passing the Eiffel Tower (it looks completely magical at night) and listening to French street music. By the time we got home and looked at a map, we realized we had walked clear from the East side of Paris all the way to the West, yet it was so beautiful it hadn’t really seemed like it. Considering I had been awake for about 36 hours straight, I was exhausted and decided to take a nice long bath before going to sleep by 9PM. I’m so excited for my parents to be here and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Paris in the Fall, a personal translator, fabulous food, beautiful weather, great shopping, exquisite architecture, my parents, great hotel, and many laughs/stories. I don’t think I could ask for anything better.

Remembrance Day and Hampton Court

Today was a rainy and somewhat cold day. All of us left the center around 9 AM to catch a train to Hampton Court. The train ride was a little long, but really fun. Jenny kept us entertained with her lines such as “what the heck is that?” and “not bad” (you kind of had to be there in order for this to make sense and be funny). Once we got to Hampton Court we first participated in 2 minutes of silence at 11 AM for Remembrance Day (11/11@11AM) to remember all those who fought for freedom in the UK. We then toured through various staterooms, halls, kitchens, and the grounds. It was fun to see the two different types of architecture (Tudor and Baroque) throughout the Palace. The gardens were very pretty, but would have been much more enjoyable on a nicer day. After Hampton Court, Abby, Kristen, Laura, Lauren, Annie, Kacey, and I headed back to the center before everyone so that we could get our hands on the yummy left over’s. We made a batch of supreme nachos that were delicious. I then attempted to do a little homework and then ran some errands with Lauren. I had to go to this sketchy Lebanese market on Queensway to get my cell phone unlocked and working. We then went to Portobello Road to find Laur some Wellies. After our errands we came back and had some dinner, some Diet Coke with everyone, and then I made a few Skype calls. Oh yeah, Mary-Celeste also told me I couldn’t do push-ups so she taught me how, but made very little progress. Best news of the day…John and Lisa are currently en route to Paris to meet me for my birthday. I leave early Friday morning to meet them and it can’t seem to come soon enough. Until then, I have loads of homework and a lot of packing.

Today I had Biology from 9-12. After class I showered and the Annie, Laura, Lauren, Abby, Kacey, and I went to the Imperial War Museum. This had all sorts of war stuff and was really cool. By far my favorite exhibit was the Holocaust Exhibition. It was so interesting, but very depressing. After the museum Kacey and I made a quick stop and Covent Garden and then headed back to the center for dinner. Dinner was the best it has been in a while and it was yummy lime chicken tacos with fresh salsa. After dinner Laura, Kacey, and I jumped on the tube and went to Billy Elliot. I had heard it was good, but it was amazing. I couldn’t believe the talent of such young performers. The boy that played Billy is only 13 and such an amazing dancer. I feel so lucky tot be able to just walk out the door and go to a show. It scares me to think that my days here are flying by so I best enjoy it while I can.

Arthur’s Seat, Shopping, and Museums!

Today started with hiking King Arthur’s Seat. The hike takes about 45 minutes and overlooks all of Edinburgh. Luck for us, it was a gorgeous day with blue skies and sunshine. We stayed on the top for a while and enjoyed the view/caught our breath before making the much quicker hike down. After the hike we walked all of the way up The Royal Mile, stopping in stores and at Starbucks for Steamers. While we were walking along The Royal Mile, we went into St. Giles Cathedral. It was a very beautiful cathedral and set up with the main altar in the middle of the church rather than towards the end. Around 2:30 PM we made our way to a Fish-n-Chips shop. We had been told they were best in Scotland, and it was true. I can now be satisfied and say I had good fish-n-chips while over here.

After eating we went to a really fun hat shop and tried on all sorts of hats. We then headed to the National Museum of Scotland. On the way, we passed the Bobby Dog Statue and Bobby’s Bar. The National Museum was a little overwhelming, but I had fun doing a racecar game there and seeing Dolly the sheep (the first sheep to be cloned from a human cell). Feeling pretty exhausted, we left and grabbed a Diet Coke for a little pick-me-up. We then headed to the National Gallery of Scotland. I really enjoyed this because it was relatively small and included pieces of artists we have been studying such as Degas, Monet, Rueben, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Constable, and Van Gough. After the Museum we strolled down Princes Street and did a little shopping. We then headed to dinner at Pizza Express, which totally hit the spot. After dinner we went to a little place called “Chocolate Soup.” They serve delicious hot chocolate and treats; therefore, we all shared some for dessert. After dessert it was back to McDonalds to brush our teeth and bundle up for the dreaded ride home. We were lucky enough to get the back row of three seats, which meant two people could share the seat and one could sleep on the floor. I slept on the floor most of the night, making the ride home much better then the ride getting there. Scotland really was a blast full of adventures and many laughs. Even though it was short, I loved it and would do it again any day.

Today was quite the adventure. The night bus turned out to be miserable. I (who never gets car sick) felt sick within the first 30 minutes, my legs were too long for the seat, and I was freezing for the entire 9-hour bus. Even Abby, who is ALWAYS hot, was freezing cold. However, once we had arrived everything was so much better. We got to Edinburgh at 8AM so nothing was open. Therefore, we went to McDonalds for some hot chocolate to warm us up and so we could change/freshen up. I won’t lie…we all felt a little homeless. After McDonalds we went to our hotel and were stoked that they let us check in early and they gave us a handicap room that was huge. We then headed to the Edinburgh Castle. My favorite thing was probably the crown jewels or coronation stone. The only down side was that it was pretty cold. As a result of the cold, we headed to The Elephant House (aka the café where J.K. Rowling wrote some series) for lunch and hot chocolate. I enjoyed a delicious cup of “Mallows Delight” hot chocolate. After lunch we decided to go take a much needed power nap at the hotel. On the way to the hotel we shopped in a few stores along Grassmarket. I was really excited about the prank store and the group of guys I found outside of it. To our surprise, workmen were just finishing installing a brand new plasma screen T.V. when we got to the room. We all fell dead asleep within five minutes and slept for a solid 2 hours. Never have I appreciated a bed and a blanket so much.

After our nap we snacked on some of our food in the room and then headed out to walk along the Royal Mile. We stopped in a few shops and then decided to go on an underground ghost tour of Edinburgh. We met our guide, who was quite the character, at about 8 PM and then headed around the city and into the vaults until about 9:30 PM. The tour was really interesting and even a little creepy. As it turns out, there is a whole underground city made up of vaults/tunnels in Edinburgh that was always thought to have been a myth, but then was discovered in 1980. Kacey and Annie we both tired and went back to the hotel, but Mandi, Laura, Annie, and I decided to check out a music bar our good friend Rick Steeves recommended. After Whistle Binkies we stopped for Steamers at Starbucks and then headed back to the hotel.

Today was a busy day. I had class from 9-11:15 and then Abby and I went on a run. It was hard to get out because the temperature seems to have dropped quite a bit in the last few days. After my run I took the tube and then a bus to Clapham Junction to get a haircut. Anyone who knows me knows that I love getting my hair done so I have been dying without Amber to do my hair. I gave my hair the trim it desperately needed and it was so nice to have a nice scalp massage. I took advantage of having a few hours all to myself and wandered around Clapham Junction before heading back home. Once I got back I ate dinner, did some homework, and packed for Scotland. Later at about 10 PM Kacey, Abby, Annie, Mandi, Laura and I all headed to Victoria Station to catch our night bus to Scotland. Little did we know the long night we had ahead of us…

Today was a rather long, but fun day. I got to sleep in until about 9 AM and then Kacey, Abby, and I went on a walk in the park. For our Culture and Communities Class, we went to the Central Mosque of London. Courtney and I kind of got separated from the group when we came out of the Tube, but luckily we found our way to the Mosque. Omar, our guide, gave us a tour and we sat in on a prayer. It was interesting to learn about Islam and learn about the culture. However, after 3 hours of it I was happy to be on my way. We then walked back to the Tube through Regents Park, which is a gorgeous park. Our plan was to go straight to St. Paul’s, but we were all cold and tired so we decided to stop at Starbucks and then head home. I came back and did some homework and took a nap.

For dinner I had the pleasure of meeting up with Tana. We went to this fun Pizzeria (similar to The Pie) that is one of the oldest in London and is known for their live music. We met at 8 PM, ate a delicious dinner, talked, laughed, enjoyed the band, and left around 11:30. Tana is so nice and it was so fun to see a familiar face.

Today was a fun day and the start of the holiday season here in London. This morning I had biology and then we headed to the Natural History Museum to go through an exhibit titles “Our Place in Evolution.” It compared humans to apes and Neanderthals. The exhibit was quite interesting, but my favorite thing was exploring the remainder of the museum. I thrilled to see the many dinosaur fossils, stuffed cats, and of course, the stuffed birds. However, I must say that the life size Blue Whale and Polar Bear were really cool. After the museum Abby, Laura, and I found our way to the bus stop through the pouring rain. We then came back to the center and did some homework/attempted to get an Internet signal/make curry jokes.

As already mentioned, today was the start of the holiday season and the lighting of the city kicked it all off. Each year London turns on lights in different parts of the city, but this year they combined the event with the world premiere of A Christmas Carol. Laura, Lauren, Kacey, Abby, Annie, Mandi, Jackie, Brooke, Courtney, Emmy, and I all bundled up and hit up each area that was celebrating. Our first stop was Regent Street. The cast of “Oliver” made performances and Colin Firth was the celebrity chosen to switch the lights on at this location. We then made our way up to Oxford Circus. This was the main stage and performers included Peter Andre (the celebrity we saw at McDonalds when we were in York), The Saturdays, and some British singer. Jim Carry was the celebrity chosen to switch on the lights at this location. We were pretty close to him and it was just fun to be in the same place and with so many people. Lighting also occurred at St. Paul’s. We didn’t make it down there, but it was broadcasted on the screens at Oxford Circus. After the light had been switched on we headed to Leicester Square for the World Premiere. Although we didn’t have tickets for the show, we did get to see the red carpet, theater, and the people attending the premiere. Once we had seen everything we went to a delicious little hole-in-the-wall Chinese place and then headed back to the center. Tonight got me really excited for the holiday season and I think it will be fun to celebrate some of it here.

Happy Halloween! Londoners get really into Halloween and it was so fun to be a part of it. I first celebrated by sleeping in until about 9AM and then went on a beautiful fall run with Abby and Kacey. We then had to watch Charlie Chaplin for our Humanities class. After the movie Kacey, Abby, Annie, Courtney, Megan, Laura, Emmy, and I headed to the London Dungeon. To our disappointment there was a 3-hour queue just to get tickets. Needless to say, we decided to ditch the dungeon. However, we were still glad we went because there were people dressed up outside the dungeon that would randomly come and scare us/make us jump. Since the dungeon was right by Borough Market, we decided to go get some food and some samples. I tried chocolate covered honeycomb that was amazing. We then headed back to the center to get ready for the rest of the day.

After the Eye we happened to stumble upon some hot homemade donuts while walking along the Thames. We walked past Big Ben and jumped on the Tube to go to dinner. We put our name in at Hard Rock Café and we thrilled to only have a 1-hour wait. While waiting we went into “The Vault” which is a little museum at the Hard Rock that has everything from Jimmy Hendrix’s guitar to Madonna’s clothing. It was pretty entertaining and made the time pass quickly. Dinner was delicious, but the setting was really fun. All of the staff was decked out in costume and would randomly come scare us while we were eating. After dinner we took a rather long route home on the Tube, but had fun people watching. The remainder of the night was spent talking, laughing, and dancing.

Today started with a morning run, breakfast, and then biology from 9AM-12PM. After class a group of us gathered on my side of the room to do homework, eat some trick-or-treats, nap, and talk. Most of the afternoon was spent getting things done that we had all been putting off. Court and I ran to Primark to make a return and then hurried back to have dinner. After dinner Megan and I went to “The Shawshank Redemption.” It was fun to experience a play as opposed to a musical and it was really good. The play didn’t start until 8:30PM so it was fun to have time to wander around Leicester Square before it started plus have something to do on a Friday night. After the play we came home and just talked with everyone and then I headed to bed.

Today being Thursday meant another long school day. I was in class from 9:00-11:15 and then went running with Kacey as well as went to the store to pick out a pumpkin. I then came back and was in my Humanities class until 2:15. After class Abby and I ran to Tesco to get a few ingredients for Jaelyn and then went to our culture class. By about 4:30 we were finally done with school for the day and could start to get ready for out Halloween Party. We ate dinner at 5:30 and then the party started at 7:30.

Laura, Kacey, Abby, and I had the idea to have a Halloween Party and it all came together perfectly with the help of Jaelyn and her cooking. There were decorations throughout the main floor, Halloween music playing, and everyone dressed up or wore Halloween colors. Jaelyn made a big pot of homemade Cracker Jacks for us to munch on, plus Terry put Treat bags together for us. The activities for the party included carving pumpkins and making Caramel Apples. The apples were a hit as were the assortment of toppings including chocolate shavings, white chocolate, crushed up HobNobs, cinnamon sugar, and crushed up pretzels. Once everyone was done carving their pumpkins we took them outside, lit them, and placed them on the porch of 27 Palace Court. As you can see, there were some really clever/cute pumpkins. My favorite was probably Laura’s “27 Palace Court” pumpkin or Mandi and Rachel’s “Stonehenge” pumpkin. It was a really fun night and I think the party was a hit.

On Tuesday morning we loaded the coach and headed off to Wales. It took about four hours to get there, but I sleepy most of the way so I didn’t mind the drive. Our first stop was at the Living History Museum. It was kind of like Wheeler Farm and a little childish, but I decided to let the child in me come out. Courtney, Megan, Emmy, and I looked at the scheduled event and decided to hot up the Halloween Art station. We sat and made shadow cutouts, colored, and told stories. I made a black cat for Sicong and she loved it. After our art stop we explored the rest of the grounds including the carnival area and the castle. We then loaded the coach and drove for about a half hour to our hotel. We were so excited to be in a hotel instead of a hostel and with only two to a room, but it turned out it wasn’t much nice then a hostel. The remainder of the day was free for us to do whatever. Courtney, Kacey, Annie, Lauren, Laura, and I went and attempted to find this Methodist church for our religion assignment, but discovered not only was the area it was in ghetto, but the church didn’t. Once we discovered this we turned around and headed to the main part of town where we walked around and then had a delicious dinner at Pizza Hut. After eating we went back to the hotel and all of us watched Titanic in Courtney and Lauren’s room. I discovered that Laura is an expert on the Titanic and had fun asking her very obvious questions with her answering it before realizing I was joking. It was a fun night and I was happy to just take it easy.

Wednesday started with breakfast at the hotel and then loading the coach for a drive through the Wales countryside ending in western England. Once back into England we picked up Peter Fagg, our church history guide. We then drove to Benbow Farm, which is a place where the United Brothers lived and many people were baptized. From there we headed to a small church called Perish Church ßthat was just below the farm. After the church we stopped in Ledbury for lunch and to see another church. We then drove to Herefordshire and hiked to the top of a Beacon. This was a place Wilford Woodreuff often came and also the hill where Brigham Young received revelation to head North to Manchester to publish the Book of Mormon. The views from here were stunning and the weather couldn’t have been better. Our bus driver, Tony, backed into a car in the parking lot, but luckily it wasn’t too bad. Our final stop was at one of the first LDS chapels in England, Gadfield Chapel. There is a number lock on the door and to get the numbers for the code you must be able to answer 6 common knowledge questions. It was rather small, but cool to see. After the chapel we loaded the coach and endured a 4-hour drive home. Wales was fun, but it feels really good to be back in London.

Today was a really fun, but rainy day. Kacey, Laura, and I woke up from a great sleepover in our double bed and headed to meet our Day Tours Unplugged coach. There were about 12 of us on the tour including some rather obnoxious, yet funny Californian airline workers, our guide named Martin, and a French couple that spoke no English. The tour left from Dublin at 9AM and we made our first stop at the Dun Laoghaire Pier. It was actually sunny and the view of the coast was gorgeous. We then continued on into Wicklow County also called “The Garden of Ireland”, which is where scenes from both P.S. I Love You and Braveheart were filmed. It was so green and almost mysterious with the mist from the rain. We drove through Dalkey (home to Bono, U2, Enya, and Van Morrison) and then through Loch Tay. When we came to the P.S. I Love You Bridge, Martin was kind enough to pull right over and let us get out to see it/take pictures. After the bridge we continued on through the Wicklow mountains, through Sally Gap (setting for many Braveheart scenes), and then stopped in Glendalough for lunch. For lunch we went to a darling little Bed & Breakfast where we had scones and hot chocolate.

After lunch we went to an old settlement and toured a tower and church. We then had a few hours to explore two different lakes. It rained off and on, but the setting so beautiful. After the lakes we loaded the coach and headed back to Dublin. We unloaded at the stop near Temple Bar and headed back to Bad Ass Café for the exact same dinner. We then got cute Ireland sweatshirts and wondered around town. On our way back to the hotel we noticed a movie theater and decided to go to Love Happens. Let me just say that I feel dumber having seen it. It was so cheesy and stupid. After the movie we went back to the hotel and went to bed.

Today was the halfway mark of our time here and the first day of our free days. Kacey, Laura, and I woke up at 4:30AM so we could catch a bus to Victoria station, then take Easybus to Stansted, and then fly to Dublin. While it was a bit of a process, it ran smoothly and I slept most of the way. The flight was only 45 minutes and as usual, Ryanair landed on time. We then made an ATM stop, grabbed a smoothie for breakfast, and caught a local bus into town. We jumped off the bus and wandered to our hotel in the POURING rain. The good news was that it wasn’t cold and we were able to check –in to our hotel early even though it was only 11AM. We decided to take a little power nap for about an hour and then headed out to explore Dublin. While walking down O’Connell Street we stopped at the best donut stand. The donuts were made right in front of you and topped with sugar…so good. Our first tourist stop was Dublin Castle. While waiting for our tour to start we went to the Beatty Library near the castle and the Revenue Museum in part of the castle. We then went on a guided tour of the castle. Today the castle is used as a government building, but we got to see the State Rooms and also the undergrounds of the castle. It was funny because there were 4 missionaries on our tour and they were surprised that we knew who they were. After our tour we headed to Christ’s Church Cathedral to attend Evensong (Yes this was for an assignment, not just for fun). However, there was no sign of Evensong or even a way of getting into the church. From there we wandered Temple Bar. This is a really fun area in Dublin full of pubs and music. For dinner we ate at Bad Ass Café. The three of us shared French Onion Soup, a Chicken Caesar Salad, and a Margareta Pizza. After dinner we stopped for Gelato and walked around the city. We finished the night by going back to the hotel and watching P.S. I Love You in preparation for tomorrow.

A Competitive Duo at Strut Your Mutt

Today was a busy day. This morning for Biology we headed out to Down House, the residence Charles Darwin. It took about an hour to get to and was freezing cold, but totally worth it. While the scientific part of it was interesting considering we are studying evolution, it was the actual house I liked most. As it turns out, Darwin comes from the Wedgewood family (as in Wedgewood China) and he married his first cousin Emma who is also a Wedgewood. Needless to say, Darwin was not a starving scientist and his house proved it. A father to 10 children, Darwin’s house and garden was large enough to accommodate the entire clan and was very charming. After Down House we headed back to central London so we could all get ready for our 4-day break. Laura, Kacey, and I went and got some food to take to Ireland. We also picked up some delicious Tomato Basil and Balsamic soup to warm us up. I then came home and took a much needed nap, did some homework, ate dinner, packed, and finally went to bed around 2AM. Oh yeah…while I was attempting to fall asleep I was kept up a little nibble and crumble sound. As I soon discovered, Snyder left her bag open and on the floor with our Marks & Spencer cookies inside and a little mouse decided to snack on them. Not knowing what to do, I jumped out of bed, kicked the bag, and went back to bed without another sound. Good one Snyder.

A Monday Full of Midterms

Today was a crazy school day and I’m so happy it’s finally over. I woke up at about 7:30 AM so I could study before eating breakfast at 8 AM and then study more until my Humanities 202 class at 9AM. My test went pretty well. I knew all of the art and did felt like I wrote a good essay, but I will have to see how well I did on the fill in the blank questions. Normally we have religion class immediately after 202, but considering that some girls had 3 midterms today, Schruler was nice and said he would hold a second class in the afternoon so we could use the morning time to study. Abby, Megan, and I studied together for Humanities 440, but we pretty fried by this point and seemed to find everything and anything funny. Soper happened to pass us while we were studying and gave us some “possible” essay questions that could appear on the test. Turns out both of his options were on the test so I was happy to be prepared for them. My 440 test seemed easier and I was just happy to be all done. After our test, Abby and I went on a run in Hyde Park so that we could get some fresh air and get out of the center. We then went to religion, which actually wasn’t too bad. For dinner we had really weird curry pasta stuff that wasn’t that good. Curry seems to be the seasoning of choice here in London, but I always alter the taste with my balsamic vinegar. After dinner we had a guest speaker (the same old guy that took us on out country walk) who came and talked to us about living in London during World War II. It was really interesting to hear about what he experienced including everything from rationed food to blackouts to climbing into their family shelter while bombs were being dropped. This event was followed by molasses cookies compliments on Jaelyn. We then tried to figure out our trip to Holland/Belgium with the Evans, but ran into a few complications. However, we did book our night bus tickets to Scotland, which I’m stoked about. As usual, the night ended in the servery having popcorn and DC with Annie, Abby, Kacey, and Laura. However, best part of the last 24 hours was finding out that the parentals meeting me in Paris for my birthday. I’m so excited and can’t wait to see them!

Churchill Museum/War Rooms/Studying

I have three midterms next week before leaving for Ireland. Therefore, most of the weekend has consisted of studying. Thursday I was in class all day. And since we had class, it was of course a gorgeous day. However, Abby, Kacey, and I did manage to go on a 5-mile run between classes.

On Friday we went to the Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum. My family and I did this when we were here about 7 years ago, but it was even better this time around. It was really interesting to be learning about more modern day history. After the museum I decided I could use some alone time (something I don’t get much of here) and so I wandered through Covent Garden, Leicester Square, and then back to the Center. While I was out I saw so many school kids and they were all in the cutest uniforms. I then went back to the Center and attempted to find housing for next semester. Abby and I called some guy named Randy about a house that is for rent, but then realized he wasn’t answering because it was only 6AM at home. Hopefully he could understand my message even though I was laughing during the whole thing. Abby and I then went on another long run and then came home and started studying for our tests. We stayed up until about 1:30AM sitting down in the kitchen and talking with a big group/Jaelyn.

This morning I slept in until about 10AM. I then did a little homework slash made some Ireland plans. Kacey, Abby, and I decided to go Borough Market again to get some fresh fruit. It was just as fun as the week before, plus we knew exactly which samples to get. While we were there we saw the guy that played Marius in Les Miserables from earlier in the week. We then came home and had a study group, ate some dinner, and did more homework/studying. I have 60 different paintings to memorize along with the artist, title, and era. However, it actually hasn’t been as bad as I expected it to be. But enough blogging and back to the homework.

Stonehenge, Stourhead, and Bath

Today was yet another gorgeous fall day (I seriously don’t know how we have been so lucky with the weather) and one of my favorites thus far. Abby and I woke up at the crack of dawn (5:35AM) and went running before breakfast. We then pack our lunches and loaded the coach by 7:30AM. We all took nice naps on the coach and arrived to Stonehenge around 10AM. It was barely sprinkling when we got there, but by the time we walked up to the stones, the sun was out and it was beautiful. Stonehenge was so cool, but nothing like I expected it to be. First off was the location. I imagined it to be off the road and somewhat remote. Turns out it is literally on the side of the road. We were just driving along a regular highway, and then there is was right outside the window. The second thing that surprised me was the size. The stones are large, but the formation together is much smaller than I had imagined. It really is amazing to look at the location of the stones and wonder how and why they were brought there.

STOURHEAD

After Stonehenge we headed to Stourhead. Stourhead is an English estate known for its gardens and architecture. The inspirations behind the creation of the gardens were painters Claude Lorrain, Poussin, and Dughet. Knowing this explains how the gardens came to look so exquisite. On a hill overlooking the gardens is the Temple of Apollo, which is where Mr. Darcy first proposes to Kiera Knightly in the pouring rain. We walked around the entire perimeter of the gardens and explored the beautiful grounds. The temperature was perfect and I couldn’t help but taking loads of pictures. This is my new favorite place we have visited.

After spending a few hours at Stourhead, we headed to Bath. Upon arrival we met outside the Roman Baths and toured through on our own. We were each given an audio guide, which made the experience much more educational. It was amazing to think about all of the people who have bathed in the baths and their purposes in doing it. My favorite bath was probably the “Sacred Bath” which is a natural hot spring or the main bath in the middle of the complex. After the baths, we walked around bath, walked around Bath Abby, had some homemade fudge, and sketched in the main square. We then loaded our coach at 5PM, but didn’t get home until about 8:30PM. Overall, it was a really fun and interesting day.

Today was a beautiful day here in London, blue skies and about 55 degrees. My day started as a typical Tuesday with Biology, a run with Abby and Kacey, and then a shower. Since it was such a nice day, Kacey, Abby, Laura, Annie, Nicole, Kristen, and I decided to go for tea at the Orangery in Kensington Gardens. We all tried something different, but I had cinnamon tea and a lemon cupcake. Both were delicious. This little outing was so relaxing and felt very British. We then walked through the park and headed back to the center. A big group of us (Abby, Kacey, Laura, Annie, Lauren, Mandi, Courtney, and I) ate our dinner (yummy Greek food) quickly and then headed to the Les Miserables Box office. We were excited because we got amazing seats and for the student price. We had to divide into pairs so I sat with Abby and our seats were on the first row of the first balcony. Prime! Les Miserables was amazing and I’m so glad we went.

As you can tell from my pictures, Fall has arrived and I love it. There is just something so great about the crisp autumn air, the changing leafs, and throwing on a scarf/boots that makes Fall my favorite season. I got to experience London in the Fall first hand on Thursday when we went to Hyde Park for my Humanities 440 class. The class focuses on landscapes, so we went and sketched in the park. It was such a lovely day and so nice to get out of the center, especially since we are in class on Thursdays form 9-4:30. I'm not a very good sketcher, but am working on it and starting to get a little better. Once classes were over, it was pretty much time for dinner. After dinner, most people went out to various places. Therefore, Abby, Kacey, Annie, and I took full advantage of this by making a big couch in our room and having a "GGDC" (Gossip Girl & Diet Coke) Night. It was very needed and a lot of fun. I fell asleep at 10:30PM and slept until 8:30AM Friday morning.

On Friday, Abby, Kacey, and I went for a run in the park. We then came home and showered/had lunch. After lunch, Abby, Kacey, Annie, Laura, Kristin, and I went to Harrods. We picked up a cupcake at Lola's Cupcakes in the Food Halls and then roamed through the entire store. My favorite section was the Wedding Dress and Evening Gown section. The workers kind of glared at us since we didn't have an appointment, but the dresses were amazing and totally in my price range. After shopping we headed home for dinner which was delicious Chinese food. After dinner we did a little homework and the Cambria Evans showed us her children's book and all of the design work she has done for Martha Stewart. She does the coolest stuff and already agreed to do my wedding invitations. We then had a DC with Jaelyn and Cambria. In celebration of it being Queen Day, we projected The Queen in the classroom and watched it with a big group of girls.

Saturday started by running in the park with Kacey, Abby, and Annie. At the end of our run Abby and I decided to join in on a game of "football" in Hyde Park. Dr. Evans came and played and was so into it. He played in the back and literally kept diving down in the mud to block the goal. It turns out he played for BYU in college. After football, I took a much needed shower and then headed to Borough Market with Abby, Annie, Kacey, Laura, and Megan. Borough Market is a huge food market with everything from fish to turkish delight. As you walk through the market, you can sample food at most of the booths. It was fun to go with a big group because we would buy one thing and then each taste it. Below is what I tasted and what I thought about it.

The remainder of the night consisted of an evening stroll, prank calling, and blogging.

9-Mile Country Walk

Today was a rather rainy and strenuous day. We left at about 8:30AM to catch a train to Kent. While waiting for the train, SiCong was worried about the dirty/smelly air and kept her mouth covered the whole time and it was so funny (see photo). Once there, we met these 3 older men that took us on a 9-mile country walk. It was very green and beautiful, but rainy and a little cold. The walk wandered throughout villages, castles, and forest. We ate lunch in a little castle called Eynsford Castle. While there, Mary-Celeste decided to climb up into a hole and we were all certain she would fall or get stuck, but luckily she made it down. We all had to bundle up, thus we ended up in quite random clothes. Most unforgivable of was our running shoes with regular pants. Annie made the comment that we totally looked like “Disneyland tourists with their kid on a leash.” It was the sad truth. Annie and I listened to my ipod on the way home and fell dead asleep. We then hurried home to our warm/dry so we could sleep for about an hour before dinner. Dinner was ok. It was a chicken stroganoff, but I opted for leftover soup. After dinner I did homework, went on a walk with Kacey, and talked with girls in the servery. A few girls are starting to get sick, so I really hope we all don’t get sick. I must add…even though it was a rainy day, Fall is definitely here and all of the leafs are starting to change into such pretty colors, which reminds me why Fall is my season of choice.

Fancy a Snog?

Today I had Biology for about 2 hours. We had a trial for Galileo and I had to defend him. Our side completely destroyed the prosecution. After Biology Kacey, Abby, and I went running and then for frozen yogurt at this fun place called SNOG. It was similar to Spoon Me in both taste and atmosphere, but not as good. I then came home and trapped myself in the Library for 4 hours so I could get a bunch of homework done. I also skyped Abigail for a little while which was fun. We then had some delicious Broccoli & Cheese soup for dinner. I then did more homework and attending a movie night for my Humanities where we watched the first hour of the six-hour Pride and Prejudice. After the movie a group of us (Bev, Marge, Renee, Gladdus, and I) had some DC in the kitchen. We then did some homework, an Ab workout, and started Gossip Girl season 2.

Today is Kacey’s 20^th birthday. I am so excited to be celebrating it with her in London. She really is the best friend one could ask for. We have so many fabulous memories and have done so much together. Not everyone can say they have grown up with, lived with, gone to school with, and literally traveled the world with their best friend. However, I am lucky enough to say I have. I can’t think of a birthday we haven’t spent together, so it’s a good thing we came here together since we both turn 20 while here. We also got to celebrate with her parents, which made it really fun.

To start the day off, we went on a run slash walk with Nata in Hyde Park. Kacey and I then went to Humanities, but decided to take the day off the rest of the day from school. The remainder of the afternoon consisted of lunch at the Italian place in Harrods and shopping with Kirk and Nata. At about 4:30PM, Kace and I came back to do a few things and get ready for the night. At about 5:45PM, Kacey, Abby, and I went to dinner at Zizzi with Kirk and Nata. I gave Kacey her present (a necklace with a little crown, short rain boots, and a scarf) and she loved it. We then headed to the theater district to see “Jersey Boys.” It was a really fun musical and a great way to celebrate Kacey’s birthday. We then headed home and attempted to do some homework slash hang out with the other girls. Kirk and Nata leave tomorrow, but it was so fun to have them here and the closest thing to having my parents visit.

Today was a very enjoyable day. Kacey and I woke up and went on a long walk (about and hour and a half) through Hyde Park with Kirk and Nata. We then came back and showered and then met back up with them. Because it’s Conference weekend, there was no church so we had a lot of free time. The four of us walked down Portobello Road and then went to St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was fun to go in on a Sunday and see it in use as a church more then a tourist attraction. I then came back and helped Jay Lynn Evans with some of the cooking she had been working on all day. She made us the most amazing brunch with a total of 10 different dishes. Every single dish was completely homemade, intricate, and artistically prepared. A few of my favorites included the cranberry white chocolate muffins with cinnamon crumble on top, cream cheese and chocolate filled French Toast, toasted bread and egg cups (filled with broccoli, feta, bacon, and cheese) topped with tomato and avocado, a quiche with feta cheese and sweet potatoes, and delicious cinnamon rolls. It really is a crime what an amazing cook she is and it’s good she only cooks once a month or every girl would come home obese. Brunch lasted from 4PM until 5PM. Kirk and Nata came to the center and ate with us and then stayed to watch the morning broadcast of Conference with everyone at the center. It was fun to experience Conference projected in the classroom, with all of the girls, at 5PM (as opposed to 10AM which is too early), yet still in the comfort of my pajamas. After Conference we had more of the food and sang “Happy Birthday” to Kacey. I then did homework and Kacey and I had a sleepover in my bed/watched Two Weeks Notice.

Today we left at 9:45AM for Stratford-Upon-Avon. The drive was a little over two hours, but very pretty. Once there, our first stop was Mary Arden’s Farm. Mary Arden was the mother of Shakespeare, thus he spent many years on this farm. We observed a traditional Tudor Meal, went to the Falconry, and visited some of the farm animals. I hate slash am terrified of birds, but I was brave and held an owl. I first held a chicken leg in my hand, then the owl came and landed on my hand, ate the chicken, and finally it flew away. We left the farm, leaving Mary-Celeste behind since she wasn’t on the bus when it was time to go, and then headed the Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. This was my favorite stop of the day because I thought the gardens were so pretty and the house was quite charming. After the cottage we headed to Shakespeare’s Birthplace. Because Shakespeare’s dad was a glove maker, hey had a guy inside the house demonstrating how to make gloves. I also learned that the phrase “goodnight, sleep tight” comes from Shakespeare’s time when people slept on ropes instead of slats, therefore if the ropes were tight, one would have a comfortable sleep. There was a cute shop that sold anything you could ever want relating to Shakespeare and in it there was a section with love quotes from different plays. My favorite was: “they do not love that do not show their love.”

After visiting all of the places, we had about four hours of free time. However, it was pretty cold and windy so we didn’t really want to wander around outside. As a result we went to Marks & Spencer and had some soup. We then flocked to McDonalds (they are super nice here) and did some homework/camped out until it was time to go to the theater. We then went and saw “A Winter’s Tale.” It was well done and probably my favorite Shakespeare play we have seen. At about 11PM we loaded the coach and didn’t arrive home until 1AM. It was a long day, but still fun.

A Familiar Face & My 1-Month Anniversary of Palace Court

Today was a fun day. I slept in until about 8:15AM, had some breakfast, and then decided to do my balance ball workout DVD. I kept the sound off on the DVD since some were still sleeping and it was funny to watch their faces as they awakened because they thought I was just randomly doing a routine in the middle of the floor. Believe it or not, it was pretty challenging and a good workout. Kacey left at about 10 AM to meet her parents at their hotel. About an hour later she and Nata came over. We gave her a tour and it was so good to see someone from home. Nata brought a huge Vera duffle full of stuff for the two of us. My cute mom sent me all sorts of things from clothes, to fiber bars, gum, DVDs, and my favorite V Chocolate Toffee Popcorn. I felt like it was Christmas. Kacey went off with Kirk and Nata for the afternoon and I went to the National Gallery for my two humanities classes. We met Dr. Soper there and toured through the gallery discussing and observing many different paintings. For my 202 class, we saw everything from Degas, to Monet, to Van Gough. For my 440 class, I had to pick a painting by J.M.W. Turner and write a paper analyzing the aesthetic choices and connections within the painting.

Courtney, Abby, and I left the National Gallery together. When we got off the tube Abby went back to the Center, but I went with Courtney to run a few errands. I then came back and got ready to go out for the night. Kirk, Nata, Kacey, and I went and had dinner at Covet Garden, got a Ben’s Cookie, and then went to The Lion King. The show was amazing and I couldn’t believe the costumes. It was such a fun night and it’s so fun having Kirk and Nata here.

Today brought more excitement and some much needed free time. Kacey and I went for a run, then breakfast, and then I took a long shower. Kacey, Mandi, Laura, Annie, Lauren, Megan, Abby, and I went on our Theatre Walk . This was a fun walk because it started on the Thames and went past Waterloo Bridge, Somerset House, Leicester Square, Drury Lane, Catherine Street, and ended at Covent Garden. Covent Garden was hopping. There was street yoga, I got a free foot massage, great shopping, and we had lunch. I was happy to find a Lush, Ben’s Cookies, Paperchase, Thorton’s, and a darling cupcake shop.

We had a yummy dinner, I did my homework, and then we got ready to go out for the night. Abby, Megan, Mandi, and I all went to Diva Beach (a really fun/posh dance club) with VIP access. It was totally different and way better than I thought it would be. There was a really good DJ and it was so fun to go out.
